Urban Development

The prosperity of nations is closely related to the prosperity of their cities. Urban development plays a vital role in the economic and social fabric of countries by offering opportunities for education, employment, and health services.

It has the potential to create jobs and offer better livelihoods, increase economic growth, improve social inclusion, promote the decoupment of living standards and economic growth from environment resource uses, protect local and regional ecosystems, reduce both urban and rural poverty, and drastically reduce pollution.

The cities of Afghanistan are growing quickly. All major cities in Afghanistan have experienced significant population growth during the last decade. Conflict, drought and refugees returning home since the fall of the Taliban have contributed to the rapid pace of urbanization unfolding in major cities. This trend is ongoing and has been accelerated by growth rate twice as high as in the rural areas of the country. On the other hand, this growth has been undertaken, generally in the absence of urban planning, and has led to poor livability, with poorly integrated urban transport systems and services. Unfortunately, this growth was coupled with several problems, including lateral and informal growth in the major cities which has been one of the main challenges in this regard.
